In Pursuit of Family Business Sustainability…
The Islamic Chamber Training Academy Organizes One of Its Flagship Programs Led by H.E. Mr. Yousef Khalawi, International Expert in Family Business.

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote the sustainability of family businesses, the Islamic Chamber Training Academy organized a specialized training program titled “Lifetime Journey Across Generations – Level One.” Held in Amman, Jordan, on July 16–17, this two-day specialized program was led by H.E. Mr. Yousef Khalawi, Secretary-General of the Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Development and a renowned international expert in family business sustainability.

The program explored several critical topics essential to ensuring family business continuity, including the interplay between family and business, leadership challenges, and fostering a well-informed family culture. Mr. Khalawi emphasized that the core principle in successful family businesses is the equation: the family equals the business—a mindset he considers fundamental to achieving long-term, multi-generational success.

He also highlighted the importance of distinguishing between owners and employees when it comes to responsibility and strategic vision. He noted that safeguarding family wealth requires cultivating a unified business culture among all family members—regardless of their academic or professional paths.

Mr. Khalawi presented a series of real-world case studies from Arab and international family businesses that successfully maintained their family legacies while expanding into global markets.
A key takeaway from the program was the assertion that entrepreneurship, combined with a deep belief in family values, forms the cornerstone of sustainability—losing either element puts the future of the business at risk.

He further stressed the need to manage and diversify family assets across various sectors and regions to build resilience against economic shocks. He also warned against overdependence on external executives who lack sufficient family oversight or understanding of the business’s unique nature.

The program concluded with the presentation of a special report prepared by the Islamic Chamber Training Academy, offering a global overview of performance indicators for family businesses. The report demonstrated how international best practices can help develop a robust family business culture rooted in clarity, documentation, and inherited core values.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Khalawi underscored the heightened societal responsibility that family businesses bear—urging them to serve as role models in governance and ethics, reflecting the enduring weight of the family name in Arab societies.
He concluded by stating that “wealth should be a blessing to preserve—not a burden to squander.
